Sarah, a young electrician

Because her family had money problems, 19-year-old Sarah Jetti took a course for apprentice electricians, a field she had loved since childhood. • Layout: a title, an introduction (who, what, why), the stages of the work in order, your feelings, a conclusion or call to volunteer; about 8 lines, no name, no school.

  • Language: simple past and past progressive (while we were painting…), sequencing (first, then, after that, finally), feelings (I felt proud / it was a great opportunity), lexis: volunteer, needy, donate, give a hand, take part in.
  • Model: A New Home for a Needy Family. Last spring, our volunteering club decided to help a poor family who lived in an old, dangerous house in our town. First, we collected donations to buy bricks, cement and paint. Then, every weekend for six weeks, we worked with a local builder. While some members were carrying bricks, others were mixing cement or painting the walls. It was hard work, but we shared all the tasks and helped one another. When we finally gave the keys to the family, the mother cried with joy. I felt tired but very proud and useful. Volunteering really changes lives!
